HVAR
Mark and I are taking advantage of our freedom to travel. The weekend from Sept 9-11th we took another trip to the Croatian Coast. This time we went to the island of HVAR. This island was written up in the NY Times travel section. This is a small but very "Long Island". If it weren't so small, so mountainous, so rocky, so unpopulated, and if they didn't speak Croatian, I would have thought I was back to my childhood home!! (Not really)
We drove from Sarajevo to a small town called Drevnik where we got a car ferry to the island of Hvar. It was slightly overcast....but of course....but the ride was very pleasant. We landed at the town of Sucuraj on the island and drove to the town of Hvar completely on the other side of the island. The island is approx 65 Km long. Shouldn't take but 30-45 min to drive.....if the roads we ok. It took us 1hr 30-45min! The 2 lane roads were narrow and windy. But the scariest part was no shoulder...not just NO shoulder I mean when the blacktop of the road stopped, there was a shear drop off!!
When we finally got to our room, we were a little disappointed. It was very small, and no meals included. But we were very close to the Hotel Amfora which was a very short walk to the town of Hvar. This was a beautiful seaport!! The food was great, the sunsets spectacular.
It took us about 8 hrs from Sarajevo to Hvar. I think the ferry ride and the wait to get the ferry shouldn't count, but Mark does!

This is the lighthouse on the island of Hvar. We took it from the ferry on the way to Hvar. You can see the overcast day.
Saturday.....it rained!! Can you believe it!! This town boasts 2700+ hours of sunlight a year and we find the day it rains!! We are beginning to believe that the rain follows Mark! The rain lasted through the morning only and then the sun came shinning through. The day turned out beautiful!!

This is the seaport of Hvar. The area is inundated with boats. Occasionally there are huge yachts. I keep asking Mark for a little boat like a yacht, but he keeps telling me "No".

We went up to the fortress that overlooks the town. All these places have fortresses overlooking the water.

Then enjoyed some sunbathing and swimming. We watched the sunset over the Adriatic and it was spectacular.
We went back to Sarajevo on Sunday morning. We enjoyed the island, but we both agree you need to have more time to spend there considering all the driving one has to do to get there.
Next week we go to Istanbul, Turkey........
